After breakfast proceed to visit 1200 years old Elephanta Caves (Monday closed). Elephanta Caves are situated on Elephanta Island about 9 kms from Mumbai’s mainland shore (Gateway of India). The caves can be reached by an approx. 1-hour boat ride from Gateway of India. Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation operates a nice Mini (Toy) train on the Elephanta Island, Mumbai
. This narrow gauge train ferries passengers between the Elephanta caves & boat jetty. The distance is walkable (about 15 minutes from jetty to caves) but going by this train is fun.
Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island or Gharapuri (literally "the city of caves") in Mumbai Harbour. The island consists of Shaivite caves and a few Buddhist stupa mounds. These caves contain rock cut Stone sculptures that show syncretism of Hindu and Buddhist ideas and iconography.
Also visit Gateway of India - the landmark of Bombay. Also visit Dhobi Ghat a huge open-air laundry. Mani Bhawan (Gandhi Memorial), the house where the Father of the Nation stayed on during his early visits to the city. Later drive past Chhatrapati Shivaji Dhobi Ghat 3 Bombay High Court Building Marine Drive, Mumbai Terminus. Drive past Bombay High Court Building. It was one of the three High Courts in India established at the Presidency Towns by Letters patent granted by Queen Victoria, bearing date June 26, 1862. It was inaugurated on August 14, 1862 under the High Courts Act, 1861. And drive past famous Nariman Point is a business district in Downtown Mumbai. Nariman Point is named after Khursheed Framji Nariman, a municipal corporator who had initiated the area's development as an extension to the Back Bay reclamation. Nariman Point houses some of India's prestigious business headquarters. Finally drive along Marine Drive a 3.6-kilometre-long Boulevard in South Mumbai is a 'C'-shaped six-lane concrete road along the coast, which is a natural bay. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's Necklace because, if viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a string of pearls in a necklace.
